Diabetes and Dementia in an In-Hospital Setting

This research project focuses on hospital inpatients who have a diagnosis of both Dementia and Diabetes. Previous research has shown patients with either a Dementia or Diabetes diagnosis have worse hospital outcomes. Although diabetes is a well-known risk factor for Dementia, it is currently unclear how many hospital inpatients have both these conditions together. It is also unknown what impact having both diagnoses has on these patients while in hospital.

Kieran Gadsby-Davis is the lead research student on the project, supervised by Prof Michael Hornberger. Kieran will conduct a systematic review looking at the number of hospital inpatients who have diagnoses of both conditions (diabetes and dementia) together with the aim to see if these patients stay longer or are more likely to die while in hospital.

The systematic review will also explore if these patients are admitted to hospital more often than other patients. Kieran’s primary research project will analyse the Norfolk and Norwich hospital's Dementia and Diabetes inpatient numbers to see how having both conditions together affects patients during their admission to this local hospital.
