NIHA Virtual Seminar 8 September
Join us for NIHA's September Virtual Seminar!
Taking place on Friday 8 September 2023 at 12pm, this month we will be hearing from our guest speaker Professor Julie Lovegrove, Hugh Sinclair Chair in Human Nutrition at the University of Reading.
Prof Lovegrove will be giving a talk titled ‘Living on the Veg’: Impact of Plant-Based Diets on Cardiovascular Health.
Global recommendations for the intake of fruit and vegetables are rarely met by populations. The average intake of 4.2 portions per day in the UK is below the 5-a-day recommendation, with lower intakes in children and those from disadvantaged groups. While there is strong evidence that fruit and vegetables are associated with lower risk of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and some cancers, there is little guidance on what is optimal for health in terms of the varieties and balance of these food groups.
Plant-based foods are rich in various nutrients and bioactive compounds, which have been shown to exert variable effects on health. My presentation will examine the evidence for the benefits of different types of fruits and vegetables and impact of specific bioactives, including flavonoids and nitrates, on markers of cardiovascular risk. The benefits of more plant-based diets to both human and environmental health will be discussed with respect to the sustainability of diets for all.
The event is being run online via Zoom and is open to all. If you'd like to join us, use the link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82758178805
