HRT use is associated with reduced Alzheimer’s Disease risk if consumed early

Our latest findings from our ‘Intervention in menopause’ programme has demonstrated that taking HRT between the ages of 46 to 56 years is associated with reduced Alzheimers disease risk later in life. In a collaboration with the University of Exeter and using data from the UK Biobank, we demonstrated stronger associations in women who had undergone surgical menopause, were APOE ε4, and had a shorter time between menarche and menopause. While further research is required to establish causality, the findings offer a foundation for future tailored HRT prescribing. The research has been accepted for publication on the journal Alzheimer’s and Dementia with a preprint available here: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.07.22.25331871v1
