Theme 3 – Cardiometabolic Health and Brain Ageing

Overview

Cardiometabolic health is critical for our healthy ageing, since cardiometabolic conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension) and obesity can have severe negative effects on our mental and physical well-being during ageing. This is especially true for our brain health, as cardiometabolic conditions are a major risk factor for the long-term onset of age-related diseases, including dementia, stroke and depression. Treating, therefore, cardiometabolic conditions will not only affect our immediate health but also will have long-term effects on our brain health, including reducing our risk for dementia, stroke and depression.

Key Focus

The focus of the cardiometabolic health and brain ageing theme is to modify or treat cardiometabolic conditions to affect future brain health during ageing, with a particular focus on dementia pathophysiology. Specifically, will employ our world-leading NIHA expertise in lifestyle interventions, cardiometabolic conditions and dementia to affect cardiometabolic conditions and in turn our long-term brain health.

Aims:

  1. To work with our community partners and the NIHA Co-production Panel to better understand and identify needs to improve the health of our community.
  2. To treat cardiometabolic conditions via lifestyle interventions
  3. To impact on future brain ageing health and reduce the risk of age-related conditions
