NIHA visits Social Supermarket in Thetford, Norfolk
Sarah Hansen and Anna Sweeting, NIHA Manager enjoyed spending a morning with Nick Chapman and visiting The Charles Burrell Centre (CBC) in Thetford, Norfolk
The CBC occupies an old secondary modern school site which houses 55 x paying tenants (charities, sole traders and small businesses)
They have a healthy rosta of approx. 60 regular sessional hirers such as social services, adult services, children’s services, probation agency, charities such as domestic abuse; NHS and more traditional hirers such as for training, meetings, recruitment and exercise.
The food trinity in support of the community comprises of a community café (which also supplies buffest), an 8 x station training kitchen supporting clubs, schools and the community and the third element is East Anglia’s first social supermarket
Nick Chapman from the centre said, “So we are not a business park nor are we a college. We are more than a community centre. We are fusion of the three unity community, learning and business. It is an integrated approach as a trusted partner with the community and local authorities”.
