UK Nonagenarians surpass 600,000
The number in the UK aged 90 years and over, known as nonagenarians has reached record levels of more than 600,000 for the first time, according to government ONS data.
The increases in life expectancy (LE) of 2-3 years per decade in the UK has been a tremendous societal success story. However before we engage in too much collective congratulatory back slapping we must remember this is not matched by an equivalent increase in healthy life expectancy (HLE, ratio of increase of HLE:LE of 0.7). Therefore we need to keep research and investing on how to support healthier behaviours throughout life in order to improve well-being ad compress morbidity into our latter years
